September 25, 2013 – Orange County Register article (Cal State Fullerton pullout section, page 6) An author who digs history By JESSICA RUBIO / ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER Gravesites of famous people from Orange County and Hollywood and shocking crimes in California history are just some of the subjects that Cal State Fullerton alumnus Michael Thomas Barry has written about. Barry graduated from CSUF in 1990 with degrees in history and criminal justice. In the years prior to his writing career, Barry was briefly employed as a juvenile probation officer with the County of Orange, a civil litigation paralegal and a regional loss prevention manager for computer retailers. He didn’t think he’d end up being a writer. “I never thought I had that talent,” he said. Five published books later, Barry is relying on the education he received at Cal State Fullerton to further his successful writing career. In 2008, he used his investigation skills to write his first book, “Final Resting Places Orange County’s Dead & Famous,” which was published in 2010. “I’ve always been a good researcher,” said Barry. “I really enjoy getting to the bottom of the things.” Barry has let his passion for research, history and studying crime to guide him through his writing career. “I write about things that I enjoy reading about,” he said. “I bounce around to different genres so it doesn’t become boring.” And he tries not to keep his readers bored, either, by writing “snippets” of people’s lives instead of lengthy biographies, said Barry. My books are “meant for today’s reader” – a reader with no time and a limited attention span, he said. Although Barry is making a name for himself in the publishing world, he remembers to say true to his roots. “I am fortunate and glad to do something I love and make a living out of it,” said Barry. “I’m very proud of my alma mater; Cal State Fullerton is really, really important to me.” His advice for aspiring writers: “Don’t be afraid to ask and don’t be afraid to fail,” said Barry. “If you really want to be a writer, write.” His other books and writing works include: “On this date in crime history,” a daily column for CrimeMagazine.com, Fade to Black: Graveside Memories of Hollywood Greats 1927-1950 (2011), Murder & Mayhem: 52 Crimes that Shocked Early California 1849-1949 (2012), and Great Britain’s Royal Tombs: The Lives & Burial Places of British Monarchs (2012).
